The father of a very good friend of mine is the same - he was at the D-Day landings, but only once or twice have I ever heard him talk about it...

Whenever he has, it's been obvious that the memories have been painful - much more so than anyone who wasn't there could ever understand...

John (my friend's father) doesn't see himself as a "hero" at all, and doesn't derive any satisfaction from the medals he has...Instead, he just considers himself to be one of the "lucky ones" to have made it back...

I tried to call him earlier, but my friend's wife told me that on Friday, John had suddenly taken it on himself to decide he wanted to be in Normandy for the services today, and had badgered his son to drive him there...(Typical John *L)...He had realised that it was probably the last chance he would have to be at a major commemorative service with the people he had fought alongside, and wanted to be there with them...

As far as the British servicemen were concerned today, the last official event of the day was a walkabout by the Queen, and as she returned to her car at the end of it, the veterans spontaneously linked arms and started to sing "Auld Lang Syne"...

So moving and yet so uplifting...

They may be getting older, but the spirit is still there...

Something tells me that the bars of Normandy will do well tonight...
